About the opportunity

The purpose of the role of Work, Health & Safety Officer (WHSO) is to contribute and promote the safe operation of the College and ensure the College complies with all relevant legislation. This role is responsible for the administration and communication of McAuley College's safety policies and procedures, legislative and BCE requirements.

 

In this position you will be responsible for:

  • Providing administrative and operational support and advice on a diverse range of matters
  • Developing and/or administering processes and procedures and responding to enquiries
  • Monitoring service delivery to identify efficiencies and ensure compliance with government and departmental legislation, directives, policies and standards
  • Facilitating work to meet deadlines and commitments and to ensure efficient and effective service delivery
  • Supervising and training support staff as required, ensuring high standards of administrative support
  • Ensuring the College maintains compliance with the BCE work, health and safety (WHS) risk register
  • Supporting staff with risk and compliance for excursions, incursions; supply and hire agreements
  • Advising leadership as to relevant changes in regulations, legislation, policies and procedures
  • Supporting staff in managing organisational compliance registers
  • Advising and facilitating risk assessments with responsible staff members for school events and activities
  • Working in collaboration with school leadership to review and refine current school processes, practices and procedures to ensure they comply with legal and regulatory obligations and BCE system requirements
  • Acting as Chair of the College Workplace Health and Safety Committee, facilitating regular meetings and following up on action items
  • Resolving WHS concerns in consultation with staff and leadership
  • Designing, implementing and monitoring WHS strategies that minimise risks to staff, students and visitors
  • Conducting regular audits and inspections to identify hazards and ensure compliance
  • Assisting in delivery of WHS training programs for staff in accordance with statutory and BCE requirements

About you

To be successful in this position you will bring relevant contemporary skills and experience including:

 

  • Having provided a wide variety of administrative and operational support
  • Coordinating tasks to meet deadlines and commitments, ensuring efficient and effective service delivery
  • Advising on administrative tasks and processes, driving process improvements
  • Understanding of compliance within a school and delivering on relevant legislation, policy and procedures
  • Led and supported administrative staff, ensuring their smooth onboarding and providing effective training for optimal performance
  • Knowledge and experience in Work, Health & Safety is essential
  • WHSO qualification - Cert 4
  • Knowledge and experience with Guardian is desirable
  • Experience in a similar role is desirable
  • This position requires that the Work, Health & Safety Officer has well-developed interpersonal and communication skills to work with all stakeholders including staff and contractors of the College and various Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) departments on a wide range of tasks and roles in a variety of contexts
  • An organised approach to work including time and priority management will be essential to the role
  • The Work, Health & Safety Officer is required to demonstrate competency involving application of knowledge in key areas
  • Maintaining privacy of staff, student and parent information and interactions is essential
  • The Work, Health & Safety Officer may be required to proactively identify opportunities for improvement in processes and performance
  • Proficiency in general administration duties such as Microsoft Suite, data processing, filing and photocopying is also a requirement of the position
  • This role requires management of multiple tasks, prioritisation of work and exercising initiative to ensure delivery of a high quality of service and completion of work tasks within deadlines
  • For this position you are not required to be Catholic.

  • Eligibility to work in Australia for the duration of the appointment
  • Hold a Paid Employee Positive Notice Blue Card prior to commencement
