Summary
Contribute to fostering a deeper, respectful understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and spiritualities within the school.
Mt Maria College, Mitchelton is currently seeking a Cultural Liaison Officer (First Nations) to join their team. This role provides culturally appropriate and general support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their families and their community to assist them to fully engage in the education offerings and opportunities of the College. The role holder provides individualised support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and parents/families to assist student learning and schooling through tailored learning, cultural and pastoral support. The role holder also operates to deepen a respectful understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and spiritualities to members of the College community. The role holder operates within the Catholic educational environment and culture and will be supportive of the Catholic ethos and Mission of the College.

About the opportunity
In this position, your responsibilities will include:
- Assist in planning and delivering cultural programs, incorporating technology and learning support.
- Support improved learning outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, including monitoring progress and identifying development areas.
- Collaborate with teachers, College leaders, and support staff to ensure appropriate academic, cultural, and pastoral support.
- Provide advice and guidance on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and cultural protocols within the College.
- Track attendance, assessment deadlines, homework, and classroom engagement.
- Liaise between the College, students, families, and key stakeholders to strengthen engagement, communication, and attendance.
- Provide academic mentoring and assist with enrolment processes.
- Support parents/guardians through interviews, meetings, and home visits.
- Engage with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and participate in events (e.g., NAIDOC, Sorry Day, NRW, Jahgu network days).
- Promote cultural learning opportunities, workshops, and College-wide celebrations such as assemblies and NAIDOC Week.
- Support BCE cultural awareness training and the implementation of BCE priorities for attendance and engagement.
- Assist teachers in embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures into classroom programs.
- Inform the College of changes impacting students and maintain a safe, supportive environment.
About you
To be successful in this position you will bring relevant contemporary skills and experience including:
- Planning and delivering cultural programs, including using technology and learning support activities
- Ability to provide tailored support to improve learning outcomes for students with diverse cultural needs
- Monitoring and assessing the progress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- Collaboration skills to work with teachers and staff
- Ability to work with many different stakeholders to create a supportive and safe space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- Applicants must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island descent
- For this position you are not required to be Catholic.
