About our team
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education is part of Student Learning and Wellbeing function, offering support to schools to enhance outcomes for First Nations students and to create the conditions for all BCE staff to develop their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Capabilities. The First Nations team provide holistic support for schools in implementing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content and cross curriculum priorities in the Australian curriculum, engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities, supporting schools in the Reconciliation Action Planning cycle, leading schools to create culturally safe environments and supporting First Nations students to achieve, feel valued, have a sense of belonging and pride in their cultural identity. The First Nations team also supports BCE staff in understanding and engaging with reconciliation initiatives, acknowledging, and celebrating significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander events and anniversaries, reflecting on and challenging attitudes, perspectives and practices to create more inclusive organisational environments and processes reflective of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ perspectives, ways of working and ways of knowing.
Summary
Join the Brisbane Catholic Education Office (BCEO) as the Lead Education Adviser, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education, is responsible for coordinating, delivering, and implementing the BCE Molum Sabe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Strategy. This role also contributes to the strategic direction of the Student Learning and Wellbeing and School Performance Teams.

About the opportunity
In this position you will be responsible for:
- Lead strategic initiatives aligned with BCE’s Molum Sabe, Education, and Strategic Plans, providing expert advice to improve efficiency and outcomes.
- Embed evidence-based practices in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education, including pedagogy, curriculum, community engagement, professional learning, and cultural capability development.
- Analyse team strategy and deliver data-informed insights to support Molum Sabe implementation and contribute to Student Learning and Wellbeing.
- Engage and lead diverse stakeholders, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, staff, and communities, through consultation and collaboration.
- Advise on workforce planning by identifying future needs and aligning team capabilities.
- Mentor and manage a specialist team to deliver high-quality outcomes aligned with First Nations aspirations.
- Assist in establishing governance structures that promote First Nations agency and voice in educational design and decision-making.
About you
To be successful in this position you will bring relevant contemporary skills and experience including:
- To perform this role, it is essential that the person is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. BCE considers that being an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under Section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld) as amended.
- Proven track record in leading a team focused on a strength-based approach to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education.
- Able to lead and collaborate with colleagues to implement strategic initiatives within an Indigenous education context.
- Proven ability to take initiative and work independently and as part of a team to complete tasks within deadlines.
- Delivered high quality professional learning to a variety of audiences including educational leadership, principals and teachers, aimed at unpacking cultural bias, developing cultural capabilities and creating culturally safe schools and workplaces.
- Strong relationship-building skills with internal and external stakeholders. Built and maintained strong, collaborative and reciprocal relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the broader education community including Indigenous education professionals at State and National levels.
- Have QCT registration and/or equivalent qualifications and/or work experience in leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education.
Eligibility and Safeguarding requirements:
- Eligibility to work in Australia for the duration of the appointment.
- Full registration with Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) or Positive Notice Blue Card for working with Children and work experience in leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education in a complex educational context.
