About our team
The School Finance Support Team offers expert financial advice to school leadership and finance staff, providing valuable guidance and recommendations on financial performance, forecasting, and planning. The team prepares comprehensive financial guidelines and templates tailored for school use, conducts thorough financial reviews, and assists with financial acquittals to ensure accuracy and compliance. We also coordinate state and commonwealth census submissions, support the development of robust school finance systems, and offer professional development opportunities to enhance financial skills and provided dedicated finance help desk support.
Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and strategic Support Accountant to join our team. This role is pivotal in advising on both strategic and operational accounting and financial matters to enhance school financial stewardship and ensure long-term sustainability across allocated schools.

About the opportunity
In this position you will be responsible for:
- Provide contextualised professional financial management advice to develop policy, influence direction, organisational practices and procedures, and operational outcomes for school financial operations, budgets, and staffing schedules.
- Assist with developing and ensuring BCE financial resources are available, understood, and utilised by the schools, and provide training to school finance teams.
- Analyse data to positively challenge and negotiate perspectives on complex and strategic issues to deliver outcomes and make recommendations.
- Work with principals and school finance teams to undertake detailed analysis on alternative courses of action to determine organisational and operational requirements in school budgetary, financial, and asset management practices.
- Develop strategies to provide sound advice to improve organisational performance by undertaking high-level reviews/investigations to ensure that financial controls are appropriate to meet the accountability requirements of BCE external auditors and other relevant stakeholders.
- Prepare specialised and technical reports and committee papers on significant projects, research or policy development.
- Work in partnership with school-based role holders and leadership teams across areas of speciality to identify, recommend, and eliminate cost inefficiencies for the schools allocated.
- Undertake financial internal reviews and support external review processes in accordance with BCE requirements for the schools allocated and ensure identified improvements from internal review processes are actioned to meet ATO, ADF, and other legislative requirements for the schools allocated.
About you
To be successful in this position you will bring relevant contemporary skills and experience including:
- Analytical in your approach to problem solving
- Written specialised reports and committee papers on projects you have led.
- Worked with multiple stakeholders and leadership teams in your area of specialty.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Tertiary qualifications in accounting, commerce, business and/or previous experience in a similar position would be highly regarded but not essential.
- Membership or eligibility for professional membership of CA/CPA or equivalent is mandatory.
Eligibility and Safeguarding requirements:
- Eligibility to work in Australia for the duration of the appointment.
- Ability to obtain a National Criminal History check prior to commencement.
